THE MANUAL HIGH SCHOOL football Rams, coached by former Bradley lineman Ken Hinrichs since 1953, started one of the most successful runs in local sports history with the 1958 season.

The Rams swept through a 10-game schedule unbeaten, outscoring its foes 263-63 in the process. The team blanked its first five foes: Galesburg, East Peoria, Decatur Eisenhower, Limestone and Pekin; and had but two narrow wins, 20-13 over Spalding and 13-6 over Richwoods.

Running back Frank Whitman, the Mid-State 8 scoring leader with 86 points, was selected to the Champaign News-Gazette and Chicago Daily News all-state teams. He was also named captain of the Rams and the most valuable back while guard Robert "Buck" Smith was named the most valuable lineman.

All-conference honors went to Whitman, Smith, end Doug Faulkner, tackle Walt Slaughter, quarterback Art Schilling, center Leon Robinson and guard Jim Rathbun.
